Before her real pregnancy, Vanessa Kirby test-ran a baby bump during the making of *The Fantastic Four: First Steps. *

The actress, who's currently expecting her first child, felt the fake foam belly was too airy to be convincing as a real stomach, so she asked her costume handler to help make it heavier.

"She kind of put heavy rice packets in the belly and it got so heavy I got really bad backache," Kirby said on Wedneday's *Late Night With Seth Meyers.*

During filming, she said the costume department suggested she take some rice out of the fake belly. As her own pregnancy has progressed, the Oscar nominee said her stomach was "way lighter" than she expected.

"I gave myself backache for no reason at all," she joked.

The new *Fantastic Four* movie takes the heroes in a new direction by introducing Reed Richard (Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm's (Kirby) super-powered child, Franklin. The movie begins with the couple expecting the baby.

Franklin has never been featured in the other film adaptations of the foursome, but fans of the comics know him well. Director Matt Shakman told ** that he always planned to bring the superkid into the MCU.

"I really wanted to bring Franklin into this world," the director said. "The most fantastic moment of my life was the birth of my daughter. And this movie is about these quiet, small, fantastic moments as well as these big moments — these moments of awe. And I think birth is one of those fantastic miracle moments that we all have, or those of us who are parents have."

Kirby previously praised Shakman's decision to focus on Franklin and said it was a big factor in her decision to play Sue Storm.

"That was really unique; that set it aside from anything else," she told EW. "Franklin is a huge star of Marvel's legacy, so it was awesome that we got to have him in ours."
