Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian activist involved with the production of the Oscar-winning documentary *No Other Land*, has been killed, according to the filmmakers behind the project.
Yuval Abraham, an Israeli co-director of the film, reported that Hathaleen, also known as Odeh Hadalin, was shot in the West Bank on Monday.
"An Israeli settler just shot Odeh Hadalin in the lungs, a remarkable activist who helped us film No Other Land in Masafer Yatta," he wrote in an X post that also contained a video of a man firing a gun. "Residents identified Yinon Levi, sanctioned by the EU and US, as the shooter. This is him in the video firing like crazy."
Two hours later, Abraham said that Hathaleen was killed. "Odeh just died. Murdered," he wrote in another post.
Basel Adra, one of the film's Palestinian co-directors, also posted about Hathaleen's death on Monday. "I can hardly believe it," he wrote on X. "My dear friend Awdah was slaughtered this evening. He was standing in front of the community center in his village when a settler fired a bullet that pierced his chest and took his life. This is how Israel erases us — one life at a time."

Oscar-winning Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal freed from Israeli detainment, co-director reveals
** has reached out to representatives for *No Other Land*, Levi, and the Israel Defense Forces for further information.
*The New York Times* confirmed Hathaleen's death and said that the Israeli police detained Levi on suspicion of "reckless conduct resulting in death and unlawful use of a firearm." The outlet also reported that Levi was released on house arrest on Tuesday.
Adra shared more information about Levi in a follow-up post on X. "This is the settler who killed our dear friend ‘Awdah Hathaleen," he alleged. "At the end of the video, he fires the bullet that took the life of ‘Awdah. Today, the apartheid court decided to release him to house arrest. Yinon Levi, a settler sanctioned by 9 countries (now 8, because of Trump)."
Indeed, the Biden administration announced sanctions on Levi in 2024, and said that he "regularly led groups of violent extremists who engaged in actions creating an atmosphere of fear in the West Bank" in a press release from the Treasury department. However, President Trump signed an executive order in January that de-listed Levi from the official list of Specially Designated Nationals from the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
"After killing Odeh, Yinon pointed at his family and instructed soldiers to arrest 4 of them," Abraham alleged in another post. "They are still jailed while he was just released for house arrest. A system which punishes the victims (who are under military law) and rewards the shooter (who is under civilian law)." *The New York Times* reported that four Palestinians were detained in connection with the incident, but could not determine whether or not they had been freed.

*No Other Land* chronicles Adra's life in Masafer Yatta as Israeli settlers encroached on his home municipality in the West Bank. Shot between 2019 and 2023, the film displays a pattern of settler violence in Palestinian villages akin to that which cost allegedly cost Hathaleen his life. After making waves on the festival circuit, the film did not find a distributor in the United States. The filmmakers ultimately self-released the film and won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
"*No Other Land* reflects the harsh reality that we have been enduring for decades and still resist, as we call on the world to take serious actions to stop the injustice and stop the ethnic cleansing of Palestinian people," Adra said during his acceptance speech at the awards show.
Just a few weeks after the film's Oscar win, Palestinian co-director Hamdan Ballal was attacked by Israeli settlers and detained by military forces. He was freed the following day after being "beaten in a military base," according to Abraham.**
