- *Night Always Comes *premiered on Netflix on Friday, Aug. 15.

- The crime drama centers on Vanessa Kirby's Lynette, who must come up with $25,000 to keep her family from losing their home.

- Jennifer Jason Leigh, Julia Fox, Randall Park, and Eli Roth round out the supporting cast.

Some movies aim to entertain, while others devastate. Benjamin Caron's *Night Always Comes* is the latter kind, delivering a raw tale about one woman's fight for stability in a world stacked against her.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Willy Vlautin, this gut-punch of a film centers on Lynette (Vanessa Kirby), a woman on the edge of desperation. In a race against the clock, Lynette risks everything by throwing herself back into the darkest corners of Portland's underworld to secure $25,000 in order to buy her home and keep a roof over the heads of her family.

Netflix's latest crime drama is resonant and relentless, offering audiences a sweaty, anxious look at doggedness and sacrifice in the face of a cruel, indifferent economy.

How does Lynette find the money? Does she manage to save her house before time runs out? We answer those questions and unpack the powerful conclusion below. Here's the *Night Always Comes *ending, explained.

What is *Night Always Comes *about?

*Night Always Comes *immediately introduces viewers to Lynette, a worn-down woman still living with her mom, Doreen (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and her older, mentally disabled brother, Kenny (Zack Gottsagen). Things seem to be looking up for Lynette, who finally has enough money to put a down payment on the home her family has lived in for years.

However, her hope is shattered when Doreen skips an important meeting with the attorney and spends the down payment on a flashy new car.

Now, faced with the threat of homelessness and the possibility that Kenny could be taken into state care, Lynette is left alone to scrape together $25,000 by the following morning.

How does Lynette get the money?

Lynette spends the night reaching out to anyone potentially willing to help her avoid living on the streets.

She begins with Scott (Randall Park), a wealthy escort client she's seen many times before. Lynette asks him for a loan, but he simply laughs it off, coldly reminding her that he pays her for a good time, not to hear about her problems. She still goes through with the intimate night (because she needs the money), but when it's over, she steals his car, not knowing it belongs to his wife.

Lynette then turns to Gloria (Julia Fox), a fellow sex worker and longtime friend, and pleads for the $3,000 Gloria owes her. Gloria initially declines to help, but eventually comes around and opens the safe belonging to her married politician boyfriend. Gloria hands $500 to Lynette before heading out for the night.

Desperate for more cash, Lynette sets her sights on the safe. She enlists the help of ex-convict friend Cody (Stephan James), attempting to manipulate him with a lie, saying it's her safe and she simply entered the wrong code too many times. Cody sees right through her lie, but agrees to help for a price tag of $800.

The two haul the safe away and bring it to one of Cody's friends, Drew (Sean Martini), who manages to crack it open. Inside is $19,000 in cash, as well as several high-end watches and bricks of cocaine. Things turn violent fast, but Cody and Lynette manage to fight off Drew and his friend, Carl (Ben Rezendes), before escaping with the money.

Even after all that, Lynette is still $4,000 short. She begs Cody to help her sell the stolen Mercedes, a car she knows Scott can't report without exposing himself as a cheater.

Before anything else, though, Lynette has to pick up Kenny from a friend's place. He's been waiting for hours, scared and unsure if Lynette is ever coming back.

When Kenny meets Cody, they hit it off immediately, and for the first time in hours, Lynette allows herself to believe things might turn out just fine. Unfortunately, that little bit of hope doesn't last long. When they find the Mercedes, Cody snaps.

Not only hasn't he been paid, but he's also put his freedom on the line by helping Lynette commit one crime after another. Lynette tries to reason with him, but Cody takes the bag of money and leaves. In a moment of panic, Lynette floors the car and hits Cody. She grabs the money and drives off, leaving Cody injured on the pavement.

Who is Tommy?

Lynette is completely out of options, so she turns to the one person she hoped to never see again: Tommy (Michael Kelly), the ex-boyfriend who forced her into sex work at just 16 years old. But she's desperate and knows that Tommy can arrange a deal for the cocaine.

Tommy only offers $3,000, but Lynette agrees because she needs all the money she can get. He sends her to one of his buyers, Blake (Eli Roth), a man whose unsettling nature suggests he knows more about Lynette than she'd like. She tries to keep the conversation about the drug deal, even convincing him to give her an extra thousand, but Blake soon crosses the line with sexual advances.

Lynette shuts him down, hitting him over the head with a lamp before finding Kenny and slipping away with the money.

By the time Lynette and Kenny return home, dawn is just beginning to break. Kenny goes straight to bed, while Lynette stays up, hoping that she finally has something to show for everything she's done that night.

Doreen is waiting in the kitchen, and tells Lynette the truth: she bought the car to make sure the deal would fall through. She admits she "hates" the place, going as far as to say she'd rather see it burned to the ground than live there another day. It is, after all, the place where Lynette and Kenny's father walked out on them.

Doreen accuses Lynette of trying to control everything, while Lynette pushes back with quiet exhaustion, saying she did it all for them.

Then comes the voicemail from the realtor, who tells Lynette he's gone with a higher offer on the house from another buyer. So, even with all the money, it's still not enough.

Doreen tells Lynette that she and Kenny will move in with a friend, Mona (Rachel Pate), the following week, leaving Lynette to fend for herself. Lynette decides to leave, but not before promising Kenny she'll visit him as soon as she can. She slips letters and envelopes of cash for Doreen and Gloria onto the table before getting into her car.

As she drives off, Lynette's voice fills the silence, reading the note she wrote to Doreen. She says she "fought" for their family last night, the only way she knew how. "But I guess you said what I needed to hear. So, thank you. And now, I need to fight for me. Take care of Kenny; he needs his mom. Maybe this is our chance to get it right."
